Mini DV appeared in 1995 and was the first widely available digital video format for home camcorders. The cassette, about 6.6 × 4.8 cm, holds 60 minutes in standard mode and 90 in LP. In Latvia Mini DV cameras were popular from roughly 2000 to 2010, until memory-card cameras took over.
Many people assume a digital recording is safe. Unfortunately tape is still tape: the magnetic layer ages, and camcorders that can play Mini DV are getting scarce. Digitizing these cassettes is just as urgent as VHS.
Six steps to finished files
You send a request
Tell us how many Mini DV tapes you have and whether you want MP4 only or the original DV files too. We reply with the price and the Tallinn locker address.
The tapes travel to Tallinn
Mini DV is so small that 20 tapes fit an XS parcel. Sending with SmartPosti, Omniva or DPD from a Latvian locker usually costs €5–7 and takes 1–2 working days.
We check the cassettes
We inspect shell and tape. If a cassette is damaged we offer a €9 repair; most often it is a cracked shell or tape pulled off its reel.
Digital copy over FireWire
We play the tape on a DV deck or camcorder and the recording reaches the computer over FireWire (IEEE 1394) as a DV file. It is a bit-for-bit copy, with no analogue conversion and no quality loss.
Check and convert
We check for read errors and create an MP4 from the DV file that opens on phones, computers and TVs. The camera’s recording date and time stay in the DV file.
You receive the files
Via Google Drive or on USB. We post the tapes back or hold them for collection at our office, as agreed.
DV file or MP4: which to choose
| MP4 (H.264) | Original DV | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | ≈ 2–4 GB per hour | ≈ 13 GB per hour |
| Opens on | Phone, TV, any computer | Editing software |
| Quality | Visually identical | Bit-exact copy |
| Best for | Watching and sharing | Archiving and editing |
MP4 is enough for most customers. We suggest DV files if you plan to edit a film or want to keep a “digital negative”; in that case the 128 GB USB stick is the better choice.
If your camcorder was HDV
Some later camcorders recorded high-definition video in HDV format on the same Mini DV cassettes, often marked “HDV”. If you suspect HDV, mention it in your request and we will check in advance and tell you how we will handle it.
Price
Mini DV digitization costs €9 per tape, regardless of length. Damaged-cassette repair is €9. Orders of more than 20 tapes get 10% off and a 64 GB USB stick included. We invoice a private person or a company after the work.

Mini DV questions
Does Mini DV lose quality when digitized?
No. We copy the recording digitally over FireWire, so the DV file is an exact copy of the signal on the tape. The MP4 version is compressed but looks practically identical.
What if my Mini DV tape is damaged?
We restore and repair cassettes, replacing the shell or splicing the tape. A repair costs €9 per tape.
How do I send Mini DV tapes from Latvia?
With a SmartPosti, Omniva or DPD parcel locker to Tallinn. The small tapes fit the smallest parcel size, so shipping is cheap.
How do I pay?
By invoice, to a private person or a company.
